Subject: Need help installing gcc2.2.2

Sorry I have to ask what I am sure is a very basic question. I am
trying to install gcc2.2.2, the install script 'install.2.x' can't find
'/lib/libc.so.2.2'. I can't find it either. If I comment out all the
references to it, the script completes. But then a.out compiled from
'cc foo.c' won't run because it can't find '/lib/libc.2.2.2'.

Where is libc.so.2.2. and/or what is libc.2.2.2 ?

Would somebody please straighten me out.
