gee, when i do a "set term <RET>" in gnuplot, some of the supported
terminals are:

              pbm Portable bitmap
              pgm Portable graymap
              ppm Portable pixmap (color)
       postscript PostScript graphics language [mode "fontname" font_size]

so it looks to me like some other benefactor has already benefitted
mankind.
