Well, I think the official response is "there may be trouble - use at your
own risk..." I have been using it for quite some time with no trouble.
Make **absolutely** sure that your entry for the C: drive in /etc/mtools
has the right FAT specified (if you specify the wrong one, you will -trash-
things on your C: drive if you attempt a write (reads are still ok, tho)

Look in the docs directories for an mtools FAQ (if you have FTP sites - if
not I will dig it out and send it to you..let me know) for more specific
information.

If you want to be extra-careful, you could backup your drive and
repartition into 2 dos drives - one that you use for mtools, and one that
you don't. If you make one backup of everything (which was recommended
before installing Linux) and then keep good backups of changing data on
floppy, you shouldn't have too much to worry about.
