From: tlhilde@roby.ecn.purdue.edu (Troy Hildebrand) Subject: large compress, not enough memory... Date: 14 Aug 1992 03:36:03 GMT
Ok, I have a 386SX(16) with 2Meg of ram... about 1.2 Meg free after bootup.
I think i just did something rather foolish, and am wondering how long
it will take to finish. I have a 1.4 Meg tarfile, which I decided to
compress. Thing is, the tar file is larger than my memory, and it is
taking a long time to finish.
How long can I expect this to take? I do not want to turn it off, and
cannot get a prompt to respond to reboot (or any command for that matter).
I want no damage to my filesystem, so will I have to wait until it finishes?
when will that be?
BTW, when switching between VC's and pressing different status buttons,
I managed to cause the keyboard status LEDs to count in binary, as I pressed
ALT-F<x>. neato. too bad I cant use any of those VC's (locked up by above
process)
THanks.
