What am I doing wrong?

I put tcsh on my disk, and the following happens: I can't get hash, or pwd
(to name but two commands) to work; I always get a 'foo: command not found'

And it doesn't matter if root uses the shell (by typing it in)
or by user tryout who has it as his login-shell

This *must* be terribly trivial, but I don't know where to look.

Any ideas? Anyone?
