From Jim Winsteads' Install notes for 096 07/04/92:

"The codes used for pboot are with the most significant bit first.
i.e. /dev/hda1 = 0301"

I interpret this as meaning that your numbers should be
/dev/sdb1 = 0817. But since I tried both combinations I still have no
solution. I am really confused because of the fact that your results
conflict directly with Jims install notes ???
